shoe voodoo?

shoe voodoo?
TL;DR: low expectations going in, shocked to find these shoes are the bomb diggity, wore them all week after winter storm brunhilda, definitely trash the insoles because they are trash and, last but not least, give them a gooo! so these shoes arrived right before brunhilda dumped 8 inches of snow in my backyard. yes, i know that's probably not the name of the storm system, but let's be honest…doesn't that sound like something brunhilda would do? and sorry to any brunhildas out there who aren't vindictive winter weather systems…but i digress. i have to be honest…i didn't have high expectations for these shoes for a number of reasons. for one, i don't typically buy wide shoes because my feet aren't wide. they also don't look very…substantial. i decided to try them, however, because they had to be better than me continuing to wear flip flops all winter, right? right. first thing i'll say is these fit true to size for me. i was always under the impression that you should size down for wide from your regular size, but i did a bit of research to make sure. to my surprise, the recommendation is to order your regular size and you may even have to size UP. say waaat? so i ordered my regular size and these fit exactly…almost too exactly. my big toe is right up against the end and i was worried they would be too small (my toes don't bend so i cannot have shoes where my toes are pressed against the end of the shoe). surprise number one, the upper is made of tpu and it stretches JUST ENOUGH. second, the rubber sole and tpu upper form a waterproof seal. i wore these shoes during the entire week after brunhilda had her temper tantrum and not once did my feet get wet. now i'm not saying they're a replacement for winter boots, but i was really impressed these knit top tennis shoes managed to keep my feet dry in 8 inches of snow. like seriously? and since we're talking about the knit top, it's not waterproof as far as i know, but once again, feet were dry while also being able to breathe and not get funky and hot. shoe voodoo? now to the problems. ok, the first isn't actually a problem, but maybe a small complaint? ok, not even a complaint…just…a testament to my laziness? anyway, i'm so used to slip-on shoes that i was really surprised i had to tie these. 😆 i tied them once, however, and i've been able to use them as slip-ons since with no issues. 😏 they remain secure on my feet…they aren't loose….again….shoe voodoo? now, this next one is an actual problem if you're a person with flat feet like myself. the insoles are trash. they might as well be cardboard. if you have flat feet or want any type of comfort, pull out the insoles and toss them in the garbage where they belong. i personally replaced mine with 4D cloud insoles and now, these shoes are perrrrrfect! i have to say, these ended up being a sleeper win for me. they're a great value @ ~42$ and i would highly recommend them. even if you don't need a wide shoe, check them out. they are surprisingly comfortable and will serve you well. in the box: shoes

I made the right choice for me

This is an update to my first review because the first pair of these Whitin barefoot shoes that I ordered was a 9.5 wide which was too short. I returned those and ordered the 10 wide which feels great. I never imagine myself having to buy another size 10 wide shoe. But thank you Amazon for allowing me to return them for free. What I realize about shoes is that you have to buy shoes that your feet will fit into comfortably and not shoes that you try to make fit your feet. And new shoes don't fit your feet until they've been worn for a while and broken in. That is when they become more comfortable to wear. For me purchasing barefoot shoes took some real thought because not all barefoot shoes are made the same. The wide toe box are not the same on all barefoot shoes. Some have a wide toe box and some claim they do but don't. I needed the correct wide toe box because of the shape of my feet. Trying to decide if it would be worth the hassle of buying a pair was the biggest decision that I had to make. But these felt good right out of the box. They also had to have some style and flexibility which these shoes do have for a sneaker type shoe. The next day after receiving these shoes I decided to wear them for a test run. I went grocery shopping and made a trip to the laundromat and my feet and legs felt good afterwards. No leg cramps and no tired hurting feet. Back pain is always going to be a part of my life which no shoes will prevent, but it doesn't have to be aggravated by wearing the wrong type of shoes. However, I would suggest wearing a good pair of cotton socks, cotton footies, or cotton ankle socks if you don't like wearing sneakers without socks. I wore socks that was made of a nylon blend material which was not a good decision and when I took my shoes off I had a hole in the right sock toe. I don't think it had anything to do with these shoes though and it definitely was not due to having long toenails. I think because my right foot is the dominant foot the socks that I had worn had caused a lot more friction just by my feet trying to stabilize my walking overall and just wasn't the right type of socks for a sneaker type shoe. Also if you need a little more support a good insole might help. I didn't need it. Afterwards I wore these shoes every other day to give my feet a resting period. I do see myself walking better because I'm not staggering like a toddler trying to maintain my balance. I'm 71 years old and never learned the heel-toe sequence of walking. I've always walked landing on the sole of my foot then heel. So these shoes are helping me with the correct way of walking and balancing. I also like that these shoes have a capped-like toe instead of being constructed of all mesh. This keeps the great toe from pushing through the material. I got caught one day in a rain shower while out wearing these shoes and the traction was great. No slipping or sliding. Since the weather is starting to warm up I will be resuming my daily walks wear these shoes. I do not foresee any issues using these for daily walks. But one can't decide on buying these shoes or any barefoot wide toe box shoes solely on the review of some one else's experience. Your own experience is what will be the deciding factor whether or not these barefoot wide toe box shoes are the right shoes for you.

Size up by a half or whole size

I bought these to wear only when I lift weights/strength train in my home for the zero foot drop issue. My usual shoes are Hokas or Brooks which are meant for running or walking. I have noticed a difference in squats wearing these, my hamstrings are a more sore than when wearing my Hokas, which is a good thing. I bought the Whitin in my regular size and a size up. I kept the size up as it provided much more room for my toes. I have a narrow foot, but my first toe is longer than the rest and curls up so finding shoes that fit are difficult and I have had corrective bunion surgery on both feet. The wide toe box was very helpful. Again, I wear this only to weight train in my home, I would never wear these outside on a walk as they provide no comfort or cushion and not much arch support for me. I have custom orthotics but they don't fit in this shoe which is fine but I do notice my foot turns in significantly when wearing these. I will probably look for a thinner insert to help with that. The laces are fairly thick and sometimes come untied. They are fairly easy to slip on and off but I use a shoe horn for my shoes anyway. The pair I kept are black and they look nice, but again no one sees them but me. Since I expect to wear them only three times a week and won't leave the house in them, I hope and expect they will last a long while.

I have many foot issues. My right foot has every "itis" there is and neuropathy. My podiatrist told me to wear a couple expensive name brand shoes to help
For a while they did. But then, my hammer toe started bothering me and I got a taylor bunion. So podiatrist changed me to barefoot shoes. again high priced. He said I would need insoles for my other issues, as most barefoot shoes dont have proper arch support. I took his advice and got what he prescribed.
They seem to work but are expensive..with insole, i took size 6. Over winter, I bought 2 pairs of barefoot boots. No top name brand and good price. Both are fine and with insole size 6 was perfect. I then researched and came across these. Only a few reviews but all 5 stars. So I ordered a size 6
Size guide and reviews said true to size. But these were snug even without insole
They looked pretty good and seem to be well made, so i returned and got 6 1/2. Just walked in them and quite comfy. Soooo… if you need insoles, i suggest you go up half size, even if other brands fit with insoles in your regular size
